Portable gas detection
Biogas production turns organic material into valuable energy. But for the people operating and maintaining a plant, it also creates a complex gas environment. Methane is only part of the picture. Hydrogen sulphide, carbon dioxide, oxygen deficiency and other gas hazards can occur at different stages of the process – and different tasks require different approaches to gas detection.
A routine inspection of the plant is not the same as checking an enclosed space before entry. Personal protection, pre‑entry testing and targeted sampling can all place different demands on the equipment being used.
This is where flexibility becomes a safety factor.
GfG developed the Polytector III G999 as a configurable multi‑gas detection platform rather than an instrument for one specific measuring task. Capable of monitoring up to eight atmospheric hazards simultaneously, flexible sensor configurations cover oxygen, toxic and combustible gases as well as volatile organic compounds (VOCs). Depending on the application, this allows operators to configure the instrument around the hazards and measurement requirements they actually face.
For remote sampling and pre‑entry testing, versions with an integrated pump can draw samples from areas before personnel enter them. The same instrument can subsequently be used in diffusion mode for personal protection – allowing two fundamentally different tasks to be covered by one platform.
The G999 is approved for safe use in potentially explosive atmospheres. For lone workers and other applications where alarms need to be visible beyond the person carrying the detector, optional radio connectivity enables the G999 to become part of a Connected Safety architecture, transmitting gas‑related, man‑down and manual alarms to a wider safety infrastructure.
For biogas operators, the result is not simply a detector capable of measuring several gases. It is a platform that can be adapted to different hazards, different jobs and different ways of working – without changing the fundamental safety concept.
