Smart network leak detection and prevention

Jan 22 2020

A pioneering, multi-agency project is revolutionising the way the water industry detects and prevents leaks.

In an industry first, the UK’s South East Water (SEW) is working in collaboration with ATi and Jacobs as part of a digital water meter trial, which has the potential to detect and alert SEW to any leaks.  Working alongside acoustic and transient systems, MetriNet is proving to be a vital tool in helping detect and prioritise even the smallest leaks, enabling pro-active network management and cost-effective solutions.

In total, this trial has brought together nine specialist companies in their respective fields to test the latest cutting-edge digital water meters, sensors and advanced analytics.  This is the first time that data from all these differing technologies has been successfully combined into one ‘data lake’ for analysis.

As part of this ground-breaking project, ATi have provided the industry-leading MetriNet M-Node sensors and early results from the initial analysis include detection of leaks that were only previously identifiable by analysis of multiparameter data sets.

SEW’s Narrowband Internet of Things technology has the power to transform the utilities sector. It enables a more accurate and efficient method of identifying and preventing leaks, helping water companies meet vital regulatory and environmental standards.

ATi UK’s Director of Technical Services, Christian McTear said, 'We are looking forward to seeing the results of all the collaborative technology being used on this innovative project. ATi UK believe that through continuous use of our MetriNet water quality sensors, we can deliver vital data and insights to the end user. This will revolutionise the way the water industry detects and prevents leaks, helping networks operate in a more efficient and proactive way’.
