Volvo hailed for its impact on air quality

Oct 19 2011

Bosses at Volvo Car Corporation have declared their delight after the firm was hailed for its commitment to boosting EU air quality.

The manufacturer was deemed to be the best performer in the European motoring industry in terms of reducing carbon emissions from its vehicles.

Figures compiled by the European Federation for Transport and Environment (T&E) showed that Volvo cut pollution from its models by nine per cent in 2010.

This is higher than the average improvement of between two and six per cent seen among the continent's other major vehicle production companies.

"The aim is to come down to an average of 95 grams of carbon dioxide per kilometre across our total car sales in 2020," commented senior vice president of research and development at Volvo Car Corporation Peter Mertens.

Earlier this week, Clean Green Cars revealed that nine firms have now fallen in line with new EU environmental legislation aimed at cutting carbon emissions.

However, contrary to the T&E study, it suggested that Fiat was now the greenest manufacturer.
