RAC car challenge 'will help London improve air quality'

Oct 15 2010

The upcoming RAC Brighton to London Future Car Challenge will promote the use of low-energy cars and improve air quality in the capital, it has been said.

Taking place on November 6th 2010, the event will publicly showcase some of the best low-carbon emission vehicles on the market, including the Nicolson McLaren Citroen Nemo Electric van and Toyota Prius hybrid car.

Mayor of London Boris Johnson has said that by showing off the selection of environmentally-friendly vehicles, people in the capital could be encouraged to make greener choices.

He stated: "We are working hard to make London the electric vehicle capital of Europe to improve our air quality, reduce traffic noise and contribute significantly to cutting carbon emissions."

Last month, transport secretary Philip Hammond committed £24 million for Britain's low-carbon vehicle industry to invest in the development of plug-in hybrid versions of brands including Nissan and Jaguar Land Rovers.

The Future Car Challenge could encourage more people to buy electric vehicles, as Mitsubishi Motors revealed earlier this week that there has been an increase in confidence to buy hybrid cars in an attempt to improve local air quality.
