A New Era in Air Quality Monitoring

Oct 17 2008

The state-of-the-art photolytic technology used in the latest air quality monitoring instrument to hit the UK market signals a new era in gas analysis.
Enviro Technology (UK), the worldclass supplier of monitoring equipment,
based in Gloucestershire, has added the Teledyne 200EU Photolytic Analyser to its impressive list of instruments.
The model, which combines standard chemiluminescence technology
with a patented photolytic converter, has the capacity to provide
trace level measurements of nitrogen oxides with a greater accuracy than
ever before.
In pristine, “background” areas, the nitric oxides to be measured are
typically in the low ppt (parts per trillion) range. Says Enviro Technology’s operations director Duncan Mounsor: “Standard chemiluminescent analysers are still not sensitive enough to gain
totally accurate readings, and even highly sensitive low temperature
catalytic molybdenum converters transform other nitrogen-containing
compounds to a certain extent.
“But using the photolytic process, the Teledyne 200EU passes the sample
gas through a cell where it is exposed to light at a specific wavelength from the patented LED array, causing the nitrogen dioxide to be selectivity converted to nitric oxide with negligible interference to other gases.
“This enables the model to provide an ultra-sensitive performance, with a lower detectable limit of 0.05 ppb.”
The converter, which is encased in a stainless steel NEMA 4X (IP65) housing with a flexible umbilical for mounting up to 50 feet from the analyser, is suitable for trace gas monitoring in remote scientific air quality stations.
