Mexico devises new sewage treatment plans

Mexico City is to receive a new wastewater treatment facility, it has been revealed.

According to the government, 49.6 billion pesos (£2.5 billion) is to be allocated to the development of a utility that will treat Mexico City's wastewater.

The announcement was made by the National Water Commission, which said that its target is to set up the plant by 2012.

It will be the first time such an operation has been set up in the area, reported the Taiwan News.

At present, around six per cent of the city's wastewater is cleansed – the rest is released into the waterways of neighbouring areas, where it causes such problems as ill health and flooding.

In related news, American Advanced Technologies, which deals in oil recycling, last week won the right to discharge wastewater into a waterway near to its factory in the US.
