Manufacturers have listed Andon on their web site as the only 3rd party socket vendor, due to the high reliability of Andon’s contacts used in a large variety of sockets.

Andon has solved the problems encountered with the misapplication of sensors by providing to the industry a range of high reliability sockets. Fast field replacements without the need to de-solder sensors and to provide customers with fast upgrades.

Gas & Optoelectronic Sensors are constructed with a plastic housing, electrodes and corrosive electrolytes.
The electrolytes may become a potential hazard in the event of leakage due to damage to the housing, improper handling or over heating.

RISKS:
∙ Electrolytes; Leakage can cause irritation of the eyes and skin Inhalation of the vapors can affect the lungs Corrosion of the surrounding area, resulting in damage to equipment

∙ Temperature; Gas sensors are normally wave soldered. High temperature can seriously  damage the sensors, especially lead free solders. Gas sensors cannot be convection soldered due to the high soldering  temperatures, which can completely destroy the gas sensor.

∙ Solvents; Production line exposure to solvents can damage gas sensors. Organic vapor in the storage area can degrade the plastic body of the sensor  Create false base lines Block sensing electrodes

∙ FIELD CALIBRATION; Difficult to obtain the same accuracy as in the laboratory

SOLUTION

∙ Eliminate production line problems by soldering Andon sockets directly on the PCB.

∙ Sockets are available in Thru-hole to fit the same PCB footprint hole.

∙ Carrier Sockets are also wave soldered and the carrier pulled off after soldering to  provide a low profile.

∙ Surface Mount (SMD) sockets, are for convection soldering.

∙ Carrier socket terminals are the same as SMD terminals and can be used in either thru
hole or SMD PCB assembly. 

COST SAVINGS

∙ Production line problems and associated costs eliminated

∙ Contract manufactures simply solder the Andon socket on the PCB without any sensor.

∙ Large quantities of PCB’s can be economically assembled without the sensor

  Sensors can be plugged-in after PCB assembly, as needed.

∙ Eliminate the cost of special handling and extra quality control to assure no damage to
sensor during the PCB assembly process. 

IMPROVED RELIABILITY

∙ Customers appreciate knowing that the sensors can be field plugged-in or replaced  without de-soldering, which could damage the sensor or release dangerous gases.

∙ Uncertainty of field recalibration of the targeted gas eliminated.  Simply unplug and replace the sensor quickly and efficiently, with very little down time.

∙Accurate calibration can be done later in the laboratory.

∙ Less danger to personnel.
