Unique and highly accurate fossil carbon tracking system to be exhibited at CEM 2023
Jul 27 2023
FCTS Genius5-Instruments and VIRWa present a novel solution to determine fossil and biogenic CO2 emissions in the flue gas of waste-to-energy plants. This newly developed Fossil Carbon Tracking Systems FCTS combines the radiocarbon method (EN 13833) with the balance method (ISO 18466) and allows thereby measuring the share of fossil and biogenic CO2 (in %) as well as the quantity of fossil CO2 emissions (tons/year) with an uncertainty below 2.5%.
For the radiocarbon method, the PmCTrace is used, which applies EN ISO 13833:2014 and follows requirements of EN 15267-3:2023 to sample the CO2 proportional to the volume flow. Thereby between 200 ml and 20 litres of CO2 are absorbed in a cartridge during 1 month of sampling and the radiocarbon content is then analysed at an accredited C14 laboratory. Genius5-Instruments with PmCTrace has 12 years of experience and references in Great Britain, Germany, the Netherlands and France.
The balance method is currently applied in more than 40 waste-to-energy plants in Europe and China and has the highly significant advantage that, by combining material and energy balances, the flue gas volume can be determined with very high accuracy, which allows, in combination with the radiocarbon method, an exact determination of the quantity of fossil CO2 emissions.
