How to control activated sludge at your WWTP from the comfort of your own home

Jul 12 2021

A recent trial at a wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) operated by United Utilities, providers of water and wastewater services in the North West of England, was totally focused on environmental compliance. At this location, QCL’s (QuadraChem Laboratories) Sentry was chosen as an early warning system of a variety of potential problems, for example, toxic shock events that can destroy microbiological processes at a wastewater plant.

The WWTP received extra sludge filtrate from several other nearby treatment plants. The Sentry, QCL’s unique bio-electrode based wastewater monitor, was deployed at the activated sludge wastewater treatment plant to measure treatment performance as operators slowly expanded organic loading at the facility.

As a result of this trial, United Utilities are very keen to use Sentry within the process optimisation strategy for the activated sludge system at this location. As the load at the site increases, the Sentry’s real-time monitoring capabilities will ensure that the plant is running efficiently and at the right levels. Operators can now access the data from the comfort of their homes, as the Sentry can be accessed anywhere on the planet.
