Connectors Used for Fire Wellhead Control Modules

Aug 12 2011

The high quality Exd TX3700 and TX3701 Connectors from Trolex (UK) have been used by provider of safety and control systems, Tyco Fire and Integrated Solutions, for use on its Wellhead Control Modules for offshore use.

Each offshore well consists of multiple bores drilling vertically and horizontally and has a ‘tree of valves’ to control the well pressure and shutdown an individual well in the case of an emergency. The Wellhead Control module on a rig contains the valves and transmitters linked to each ‘tree of valves’ for each well which are housed within a sliding drawer dedicated to each well.

The Trolex Exd Connectors have been used to connect the drawer to the transmitter and valve cables and are used to isolate each drawer in the event of a problem or failure. The drawer can then be quickly and easily replaced to ensure well production downtime is kept to a minimum.

Since its introduction over 20 years ago, the Trolex Exd Connector has firmly established as the pre-eminent connector of choice in the industry. The extremely robust, multi-pin connectors are designed for offshore, oil and gas exploration with a proven reliability in heavy duty, hazardous area applications.

Equally suitable for control circuits or power distribution, the rapid disconnect features of the connector enable swift replacement or removal of critical plant equipment within minimum downtime, temporary equipment can also be more rapidly deployed.

All the main components of the connectors are interchangeable, making it easy to specify a choice of connector formats. The conductors are easily terminated by releasing the two large screws to disassemble the connectors and are simply put together by pushing the two halves together and tightening two large fasteners. Up to five coding position options are available to prevent incorrect mating of adjacent connectors.

One of the most important benefits of the design of the connectors is an improved assurance of safety standards for installers and users in hazardous areas. Significant installation costs are made through the ease of cable termination and uncomplicated design.

The TX3700 and TX3701 Connectors have a solid machined housing in brass or stainless steel, with integrated shock protecting fenders and captive protection caps immediately to hand.
