UK meets environmental waste targets

The UK has pushed forward its environmental agenda to improve the atmosphere and boost air quality by meeting landfill waste targets.

Earlier this week, the government announced that it is on track to achieve the 2010 Landfill Directive target, which is aimed to reduce bridgeable waste to landfill sites.

Environment minister Lord Henley said: "It is pleasing to see that from the latest data the UK will meet the 2010 Landfill Directive target as it shows that people are beginning to realise that we can't continue sending huge amounts of waste to landfill."

He added that this coalition intends to be "the greenest government ever", stating that it aims towards "the objective of zero waste to landfill".

Local authorities are already playing a role in improving air quality and earlier this week Notts County Council and Nottingham City Council teamed up to produce a waste disposal plan.

The 20-year strategy will help the county to reduce the 4.4 million tonnes of waste it produces every year, according to the Nottingham Post.
