Welsh company fined over abandoned waste

A Welsh recycling company has been fined for abandoning waste.

Paul Cooper, director of PKRN Recycling Ltd, pleaded guilty at Abertillery Magistrate's Court to leaving waste on a site at the Crown Business Park in Tredegar.

The company, which stopped trading in 2007, experienced financial difficulties and was unable to repair the machinery needed to recycle the plastic that was brought to it.

According to the Environment Agency, PKRN Recycling did not have a licence to store of transfer waste material.

Commenting on the case, environment officer Ashley Lansdown said: "It is not acceptable for businesses to abandon their waste when they fall into financial difficulty, especially when they have profited from accepting the waste."

Companies have a legal responsibility to ensure that waste is either reused or disposed of properly, he added.

In related news, Lincolnshire-based company was been fined £19,800 and ordered to pay court costs of £2,388 earlier this month after failing to comply with recycling regulations.
