Wastewater plant in Ireland hits disapproval

A wastewater plant in Ireland has received criticism after a report concluded that it allowed higher levels of odour than it stipulated in its environmental plan.

The level of odor stipulated in the plant's original environmental impact statement was increased by twenty times in practice, according to an independent report by consultant Brendan Fehily.

Mr Fehily said further discrepancies between the figures from Dublin City Council and builders ABA construction are "either a serious error of judgment or a mistake".

The five-year-old plant in Ringsend, Dublin, often takes more waste than it can handle and has received complaints from locals in the past, reports state.

Waste generated by visitors, tourists and commuters has not been taken into account during capacity calculations, resulting in the plant receiving more wastewater than it can handle, concluded the study.

At the beginning of November, building began on a new wastewater facility in Pensacola, Florida, which, when completed, will be able to accept wastewater from up to 14 miles away.
