Platinum crucibles - all-round helpers in the laboratory

Jul 07 2009

Heraeus ranks as a market leader in the manufacture of platinum crucibles in Germany, and indeed Europe. As a precious metals specialist, Heraeus excels in a high degree of vertical production integration in Hanau (Germany) and is thus able to make laboratory equipment in an enormous range of sizes, either in standardized forms, or designed to meet particular specifications. Crucible sizes range from “micro thimble“up to “rain barrel“, standard crucibles the size of a “shot glass“are produced by Heraeus in their thousands each year.

Platinum – indispensable for producing chemical labware

Reliable chemical resistance to aggressive mediums, high melting points and stability at high temperatures are essential features which have characterized both platinum and platinum alloys for decades as being excellent materials for producing labware.
By using materials made from Dispersion Hardened Platinum (DPH) Heraeus has established a unique class of labware material, devised in close collaboration with customers and clients from within the industry and in analytical laboratories. In comparison to pure platinum the innovative DPH material is more resistant to corrosion and robuster against thermic and mechanical strain. It is highly sought after in situations in which crucibles need to have a long economic life-time, and need to demonstrate high temperature strength as well as corrosion stability and strength of shape. DPH platinum crucibles have opened up new opportunities. Whereas traditional crucibles allowed for fusion levels of up to about 1100 °C, the innovative crucibles pave the way for an increase of up to more than 1600 °C.
