Choosing AQMesh for Clean Air Day and beyond

Jul 12 2022

AQMesh is currently being used in a number of air quality monitoring initiatives by a range of users. Across the UK, for which today is its annual Clean Air Day campaign, there are a number of pods deployed outside schools, being used by ambulance services, installed at metal foundries and at railway stations.

Clean Air Day is the UK’s biggest campaign for action against air pollution and aims to bring together businesses with the health sector and local communities to help improve awareness and understanding of air quality and why clean air matters. The theme for Clean Air Day 2022 is “air pollution dirties every organ of your body” and focusses on what can be done to improve public health.

In the UK alone it is estimated that poor air quality causes around 36,000 deaths each year, with that figure rising to seven million globally. Long-term exposure to nitrogen dioxide (NO2) can cause and worsen asthma, and fine particle matter (PM2.5) can penetrate deep into the lungs and reduce lung function. Ground-level ozone (O3) is formed by reactions with nitrogen oxides (NOx) and volatile organic compounds (VOCs) from traffic and industrial emissions in the presence of sunlight, so with the UK currently also experiencing a heatwave, levels of O3 pollution in busy areas are also set to increase. Prolonged exposure to high levels of O3 can have severe effects on human health, including causing asthma, inflammation of the airways and lung disease.

AQMesh pods can measure up to five gases out of NO, NO2, O3, CO, SO2 or H2S, as well as an additional CO2 sensor, and PM1, PM2.5, PM4, & PM10 via an optical particle counter, all in one compact unit, with seamless data delivery through a variety of access options. Wind speed & direction and noise monitoring are also available, with humidity, pressure and pod temperature included as standard.

AQMesh is committed to supporting projects around the world to help measure, manage and mitigate global air pollution and its impact on people’s health. Current users of AQMesh throughout the world include mining operators in South Africa and the Middle East, construction companies in Italy, the UK and Canada, local authorities and schools across six continents and a range of transport hubs and city-wide networks.
