A cost effective and precise solution to CEMS calibration

Feb 05 2020

Environics offer a series of Continuous Emissions Monitoring Calibration Systems (CEMCS) that meet or exceed the performance requirements of most international air monitoring protocols. Their units stand out in the field due to their accuracy as well as all units being custom designed and manufactured for each customer’s specific needs in terms of gases used, dilution ranges and other special features.

These customised and computerised mass flow controller based systems have been in use, across the world since 1986, enabling operators to dilute a single high concentration cylinder of span gas to low levels for the calibration of gas analysers.  Environics units can be designed to minimize risk for any gas you may need, including corrosive and explosive gases. Cylinder usage is reduced considerably, shaving costs by as much as 60%, whilst reliably supplying the correct gas concentration needed to calibrate the analyser. The expected ROI period for a Series 4040 is typically less than 18 months and often considerably less depending on how much cylinder gas is used.

Unlike many calibrators, Environics technology provide a highly repeatable +/-1% SETPOINT blend accuracy. Little upkeep is required beyond purging the flow path after use and annual recalibration of the mass flow controllers. It is not uncommon for units to be still in use after 20 years.

Thousands of instruments are in use and Environics have a substantial library of solutions built on their decades of experience in customising their systems to meet their clients’ specific criteria. Units can be customised to include glass lined or heated flow path, pressure regulation, humidification, permeation, a wide variety of seal materials, audio/visual alarms, canister filling, or purged enclosures to name just a few.

Environics standard Series 4040 can generate blends down to a 10,000:1 ratio or more. The Series 4040’s mass flow controllers are factory calibrated by using a computer controlled primary flow standard traceable to the US' National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST).  These systems are able to perform calibrations in a fully automated mode thus enabling the simple maintenance of an audit trail.
