The US EPA has recently released two new methods that feature Reagent-Free IC systems for determination of bromate and haloacetic acids. Method 302.0: Determination of Bromate in Drinking Water Using Two-
Dimensional Ion Chromatography with Suppressed Conductivity Detection brings the ease of Just Add Water eluent generation to bromate analysis. Dual pumps and eluent generators of the ICS-3000 system allow
different concentrations and flows in the different dimensions, permitting the use of a high-capacity column in the first dimension for matrix elimination, and a smaller diameter column in the second dimension for
high sensitivity.
Because the matrix is diverted, trace bromate can be detected in water with highionic-strength matrices without post column derivitisation. Method 557: Determination of haloacetic Acids, Bromate, and Dalapon
in Drinking Water by Ion Chromatography Electrospray Ionisation Tandem Mass Spectrometry (IC-ESI-MS/MS) is an alternative to methods 552.1, -.2, and -.3, which use GC/ECD based detection and require
laborious extraction and sample preparation. Method 557 uses direct injection without sample pretreatment, and eluent generation for Just Add Water simplicity. The IonPac® AS24 column fully resolves each analyte, even in high-ionic-strength matrices, allowing diversion of matrix ions prior to introduction to the ESI source, for exceptional detection sensitivity.
