Informative Bump Test Video For Portable Gas Detection Units Launched

Nov 09 2016

Air Products (UK) recently launched the second in its’ series of Analytical Insights videos, where it provides users advice on the importance of carrying out bump testing of portable gas detection units.

This short but informative video consists of four main sections and has been written to act as a best practice safety guide highlighting the regulations currently in place and the benefits of compliance.

Representation is from across the gas detection segment, including industry expert JMS Consultants (Jeff Regan), gas detection equipment manufacturer GFG Europe (Chris James), calibration gas supplier Stephen Mellor (Air Products) and a practical demonstration from a high profile end user Gilbarco Veeder-Root. (Neil Roach)

Jeff Regan commented “When I was contacted by David Bryant at Air Products and he spoke about producing this video I immediately said yes. Many organisations do not understand their legal obligations to carrying out regular bump tests and this is an important message which needs to promoted to ensure all employees, colleagues and the public are kept safe whilst being compliant to the various regulations that are currently in place”

There are common misconceptions which have built up over the years as to why bump testing is not necessary or are even classed as optional. These are covered by Chris James who explains why there is never any excuse, failure to do so could prove fatal. “Working together on this video with companies who are directly involved with the gas sensor detection market, really enables us to emphasise the significance of these simple tests and the consequences of not doing so.” he commented after the editing had been completed.

Stephen Mellor remarked “Most organisations are aware of the importance of obtaining the correct gas concentration from their supplier, but many are unaware as to how critical other parts of delivery system are. We are able to cover here certification, traceability and stability of gases, along with system integrity to ensure the gas concentration purchased is the one delivered to the sensor head for bump testing.”

Neil Roach, completes the presentation by discussing the significance of these safety checks for his service engineers on a day to day basis. He concludes with a practical demonstration highlighting how quick and simple they are to carry out. “At Gilbarco Veeder-Root safety is our number one priority, as a world leader in fuel dispensing technology and integrated fueling solutions we place our engineers into potentially dangerous environments on a daily basis. Regular bump testing is not an option for us, it is a given necessity and extremely easy to carry out.”

The collective aim of the four organisations is to educate those responsible for ensuring employee safety when operating in environments where there's is a potential for hazardous gas atmospheres.
