New GC-MS Runs Both Single and Triple Quadrupole Methods Using Familiar Software

Sep 11 2014

Laboratories performing environmental analysis, forensics testing or other single quadrupole gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) analyses that need a simple, cost-effective way to add GC-MS/MS capabilities, have a new option with the Thermo Scientific (USA) TSQ Duo triple quadrupole GC-MS/MS system.

“We designed this instrument specifically for labs needing to maintain their current GC or single quadrupole GC-MS workflows while adding triple quadrupole capabilities with minimal disruption,” said Paul Silcock, marketing manager, GC-MS for Thermo Fisher Scientific. “The TSQ Duo system allows users to run their current methods and then easily move over to MS/MS analysis when the time is right for them, on a familiar system using the Thermo Scientific Dionex Chromeleon Chromatography Data System (CDS).”

The Chromeleon CDS’ new selected ion monitoring (SIM) bridge software capability helps simplify the adoption of MS/MS methods on the TSQ Duo.

The new TSQ Duo system is based on the proven Thermo Scientific TRACE 1300 gas chromatograph and TSQ mass spectrometer platform, and is designed to perform both single and triple quadrupole analysis on the same instrument. In single quadrupole mode, the TSQ Duo system can deliver high–quality, full-scan spectra, searchable against popular MS libraries, and high-performance SIM quantitation. In triple quadrupole mode, selected reaction monitoring (SRM) enhances sensitivity by allowing clean detection, even in very complex matrices.

The Chromeleon CDS, popular in many laboratories around the world, can perform a number of automated actions based on in-run chromatographic results. This automation minimises analytical errors and improves efficiency. The CDS is designed to facilitate method development as well as method transfer from single to triple quadrupole workflows.

“This is the first time that chromatographers have been able to access the power of triple quadrupole mass spectrometry using the Chromeleon CDS, and we are very excited about this powerful combination,” said Frank Tontala, Chromeleon CDS product manager for Thermo Fisher Scientific.
