Tried-And-Tested Keypads Meet The Most Sophisticated Requirements

Sep 02 2014

Although the current trend is towards Touch applications, classic keypads with a response via a clear tactile action point are more popular than ever. Bopla's (Germany) Profiline keypads are the best example of this, and their advantages include optimal haptics and operability. They are also available with backlit keys.

Bopla's Profiline series consists of innovative keypads which, in terms of haptics and ergonomics, meet the most sophisticated requirements. Two of the main features are Bopla's typical "short stroke feeling" and the ideal finger guidance. When it comes to the shape of the keys, Bopla gives the user design freedom – extremely small or very large-area key surfaces can be used. The keys, with their tactile feel, are fitted between the snap dome and the front membrane. They provide not only an excellent tactile response, but are also extremely sturdy. In addition to normal protection against dust and moisture, the integrated acrylic inlay also protects the snap dome against possible deformation. This means that even great and concentrated pressure cannot damage the key areas.

By making use of a suitable inlay design, Bopla can also satisfy customers' special needs. These include rocker switches or keypads with a double contact function which meet the highest safety standards for the operation of devices and machines. The double contact makes it easy for the user to recognise two different switch functions. This function allows the production of even single fault protection (redundant) switch concepts which are specified in safety-critical applications.

The Profiline keypad is also available in a backlit design. In comparison with backlit EL membranes, this design offers important advantages in respect of operating life, power consumption and haptics. With Profiline, the base membrane is constructed using copper technology – a very small but high-performance LED is fitted in the middle of the key. A special snap dome with a hole permits very homogeneous illumination of the keypad. The light passes through the hole and into the integrated acrylic inlay, where it is dispersed as required. In contrast to the EL membrane, the keys can also be selective and – by means of a special RGB-LED – can provide illumination in different colours.
