The First Family of Analytical Sensors that No Longer Require an External Transmitter

Sep 15 2014

KROHNE (UK) will showcase their comprehensive range of analytical solutions on stand 11 of the “must attend” event of the year for Water/Wastewater and Environmental Monitoring professionals. KROHNE has
introduced the SMARTSENS range of analytical sensors marking a turning point in analysis. As the first
family of 2-wire, loop powered analytical sensors incorporating integrated transmitter technology,
SMARTSENS sensors significantly reduce the risk of failures along the chain from sensor to the process
control system whilst easing the handling of analytical sensors in a revolutionary way.

Until today, analytical sensors required the use of an external (proprietary) transmitter in order to translate
the sensor signal for use in the control process. Considering the possible error by the requirements of IEC
61508/IEC 61511 in the chain from sensor to process control system, the transmitter represents the main
source of error in percentage. Poor installation, cabling or configuration of the transmitter are frequently
occurring issues. To eliminate these risks, KROHNE miniaturised the transmitter and fitted it into the sensor
head. Any SMARTSENS sensor can be connected directly to the process control system, featuring direct
communication via 4…20 mA/HART. KROHNE is the first provider to offer a direct connection from the
sensor to the process control system via a standardised fieldbus.
