New Calibration Scientist Appointed for Upgraded Laboratory
Jul 02 2015
“We have recently expanded our calibration team with the appointment of Helen Turner as Calibration Scientist. Helen has a BSc in Forensic Science and is currently studying for an MSc in Chemistry,” reports Dr Cathy Rushworth of Chelsea Techologies Group (UK).
“Our Calibration Laboratory has also been upgraded, including the installation of a state-of-the-art bench-top spectrofluorometer (HORIBA Scientific’s Aqualog) which can generate fluorescence excitation-emission matrices (EEMs) with excitation from 200 nm to 800 nm and emission from 250 nm to 800 nm. This enables us to detect both UV fluorescence from hydrocarbons and longer wavelength fluorescence from chlorophyll,” reports Dr Cathy Rushworth. “We have also recently installed a Millipore Milli-Qsystem which provides us with highly purified water (18.2 MΩ, ≤ 5 ppb total organic carbon) for sensor calibration and preparing standard solutions. Highly pure water is particularly important for UV fluorescence applications. For hazardous chemical handling, a ductless fume hood has been installed.”
The new facilities provide CTG with the capabilities to analyse the fluorescence of unknown samples, provided by current and new customers. Being able to pin point fluorescence peaks from the target analyte of interest, as well as assess any background fluorescence interference, is proving a vital tool for many applications including water quality monitoring. With these new tools, CTG can select the most appropriate fluorometer from its standard product range, as well as optimise fluorometers for specific applications.
