Cardiff council accused of dumping green rubbish bags

Cardiff  council have been accused of dumping green rubbish bags in landfill, questioning the validity of the government initiative.

Allegations were made of the council by workers at the high-tech centre where household waste is sent for recycling. The green rubbish bags were introduced as a waste management scheme to recycle as much household waste as possible, and can be used to dispose of leftover food items.

However, the scheme has been questioned in one local council, where workers have speculated that hundreds of tonnes of material from green rubbish bags have in fact been buried in the adjacent landfill site. This makes quite a mockery of the initiative, which requires households and businesses to separate their waste for collection.

The council has responded to the allegations, saying that there has indeed been one such incident. However, they added that this is an exceptional case which had been  properly documented at the time. The authority firmly denied that recyclable material was routinely being sent to landfill.
