Ships' air pollution 'less than expected'

Oct 27 2009

Levels of air pollution created by shipping are much lower than what was previously believed, research has indicated.

Ships were thought to be responsible for 68 per cent of sulphur emissions, but a study conducted in Denmark has revealed that the true proportion is nearly half that.

Figures from research institute Danmarks Miljoundersogelser and the University of Aarhus found that the industry in fact accounts for 37 per cent, while nitrogen oxides and particles from ships were also below predictions.

The investigation - based on emissions from traffic in Danish waters - was carried out on behalf of the Danish Environmental Protection Agency and the Danish Shipowner's Association.

And the country's minister of environment, Troels Lund Poulsen, highlighted the fact that "shipping pollutes the air far less than expected".

Denmark will be a focus for environmental issues later this year, as the UN Climate Change Conference takes place in December.
