Introducing Clarity – the Wearable Air Quality Monitor

Nov 16 2015

Environmentally-minded scientists from the University of California Berkeley have come up with an innovative new air monitor that can be easily worn or placed about your person or your home in order to provide continuous, real-time data about the cleanliness of the air that you and others around you are breathing.

Clarity was developed in order to allow everyday people to collect and benefit from information about the quality of the air in their local environment. As well as helping those in developed countries in Europe and North America, the device could also be invaluable in saving lives, improving air quality and fighting climate change in underdeveloped and over-polluted countries such as China.

A Revolution in Air Quality Monitoring

With China long being regarded as one of the most polluted atmospheres on Earth, the Clarity have initially earmarked a primary goal of effecting a new era in air quality monitoring in the Asian stronghold. However, they also envisage expansion into far more global markets.

“Down the line, we want to expand to India, Mexico and other polluted places because we believe Clarity will be a must-have product for anyone in these areas who wants to ensure the safety and health of their air,” explains Hannah Hagen, founder of the innovative company. “We also want to make Clarity available to asthmatics that live in the US or Europe, whose conditions are triggered by air pollution,” she added.

Since air is such a valuable commodity all over the world, there seems no reason that Clarity’s proposed plans can’t succeed on a global scale. Furthermore, Clarity could prove to be an essential tool in the workplace, where the amount of emissions and contaminants that workers (and surrounding residents) are subjected to is an increasingly concerning issue. As such, the device could form part of an evolution in environmental monitoring, especially due to its utilisation of wireless data which can be accessed remotely from anywhere.

How it Works

The Clarity monitor takes the form of a small sensor which can easily be clipped onto a belt, bag or bicycle or placed in a strategic location in the home, office or car. Wherever it is situated, the ingenious sensor will continually gather information about the cleanliness of the air in its immediate environment.

As well as monitoring major pollutants such as nitrogen dioxide, particulate matter (PM2.5), ammonia and several volatile organic compounds, the Clarity system also measures humidity and temperature.

Because it comes equipped with a special app, those using the device can then upload the data onto their Smartphone and interpret it to give them the best idea of when and where to exercise in the city, whether or not their environment is suffering from a particularly bad spell of pollution and how to plan accordingly. As such, it could be a key tool not only for those in areas with consistently poor air quality, but also those who are conscious about the air they breathe when doing strenuous activities such as exercise, for example.
