The Environment Agency is investigating an outbreak of fungus in the River Crane, it has been revealed.
A number of complaints were received from residents of North Feltham and Twickenham, with many noting an unusual smell.
Grey fungus is generally associated with organic discharge and grows across the river bed, affecting organisms living in the water.
Sarah Mills, environment management team leader, said a thorough investigation is being conducted.
"Due to the extent of the coverage of the grey fungus we know we are looking for a prolonged and sustained source of nutrient release into the river," she commented.
Ms Mills added that investigators are confident they will be able to identify the source of the fungus as soon as samples have been tested.
