UN scientists 'need to conduct better environmental analysis'

UN scientists need to produce better environmental analysis of the future of climate change, it has been suggested.

The experts have come under criticism after suggesting that Himalayan glaciers could all melt over the next 25 years.

After this was said to be an overstatement, UN secretary-general Ban Ki-moon called for an independent review of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, according to a Reuters report.

Head of climate analysis at the US National Center for Atmospheric Research Kevin Trenberth told the news provider: "There needs to be a more real-time assessment of the climate."

A review of the group's work is expected to be released on Monday (August 30th 2010) and is thought to cover issues such as the delay in responding to criticism and not making clear the difference between the scientific aspect of climate change and the political side of it.

UN scientists are also set to conduct environmental analysis on a group of Chinese projects after green campaigners protested against them, Point Carbon News reported.
