Partial Pressure Definition: The partial pressure is defined as the pressure of a single gas component in a mixture of gases. It corresponds to the total pressure which the single gas component would exert if it alone occupied the whole volume. In biology and medicine above all the partial pressures of oxygen and carbon dioxide are of importance. Here, the term partial pressure is also used for the concentration of gases dissolved in liquids, e.g. in blood or water. Thereby the partial pressure of a gas dissolved in a liquid is the partial pressure of that gas which would be generated in a gas phase in equilibrium with the liquid at the same temperature.
